Pokémon Kombucha Damtuh: When Korean Kombucha Meets the Pokémon Universe

Ten flavors, ten Pokémon, and a collaboration that blends nostalgia with summer freshness.

Damtuh, a Korean brand known for its instant powdered drinks, surprised its market by announcing an official collaboration with the Pokémon license. The result is a collection of ten powdered kombuchas, each embodied by a Pokémon whose personality, color or character echoes the flavor on offer. It is part of a broader trend of collaborations between Korean food brands and popular licenses, closely followed by goodies fans and collectors.

01

The concept behind the Damtuh × Pokémon collaboration

The idea behind this collection rests on a simple but remarkably effective principle: match each kombucha flavor with a Pokémon whose look or character evokes that taste. Pikachu, the most recognizable Pokémon in the franchise, is paired with lemon, the most popular and accessible flavor in the range. Snorlax, known for his legendary appetite, goes with black grape, a more generous and sweeter flavor. Sylveon, the pastel-toned Fairy-type Pokémon, illustrates the floral softness of Korean flat peach.

Each individual package features the illustration of its Pokémon in a graphic style designed to appeal to both kombucha fans and Pokémon collectors, two audiences that overlap more than you might think in South Korea, where collectible culture is especially well developed.

02

Understanding Korean powdered kombucha

Unlike traditional fermented kombucha, which requires a SCOBY culture and several days of active fermentation, Korean powdered kombucha works on a radically different principle: it recreates the tangy, lightly sparkling taste profile of kombucha with a blend of flavored powders and effervescent agents, with no actual fermentation at the time of preparation.

This format, especially common among Korean brands such as Damtuh or Teazen, answers a demand for simplicity: no fermentation equipment, no waiting time, and a drink ready in seconds. For lovers of traditional kombucha looking for live fermentation, it is more of a kombucha-inspired drink than a fermented kombucha in the strict sense.

03

The ten flavors and their Pokémon

The main collection brings together ten distinct pairings, each available in a box of 30 individual sticks:

Pokémon Flavor
Pikachu Lemon
Squirtle Korean lime
Jigglypuff Grapefruit
Sylveon Flat peach
Clefairy Seven Berry
Snorlax Black grape
Psyduck Apple Mango
Bulbasaur Green plum
Togekiss Strawberry
Magikarp Sour cherry

Two additional flavors exist in a 10-stick discovery format: green apple, paired with Chikorita, and the mango lychee blend, carried by a second version of Pikachu. These shorter formats let you try a flavor without committing to a full box.

Did you know?

In Korean food collaborations with popular licenses, the flavors tied to a franchise's most iconic characters, here Pikachu and Snorlax, are almost always the first to sell out on the shelf.

How to prepare your Pokémon kombucha

Preparation follows the same principle as other Korean powdered kombuchas. Stir one stick into about 200 ml of cold water, still or sparkling depending on the feel you want. Add ice for an especially refreshing version, and mix before serving. Some fans add a squeeze of fresh lemon or a few mint leaves to boost the freshness, especially on citrus flavors such as Pikachu's lemon or Squirtle's lime.

The individual stick format also makes it easy to carry: you can take your favorite flavor in a bag or in the car and prepare it anywhere there is a source of cold water.

05

Why these collaborations are a hit in Korea

For several years now, the Korean beverage and confectionery market has multiplied collaborations with international licenses, whether animated characters, video games or leisure brands. This strategy answers a double dynamic: catching the attention of a young audience that loves collectibles, while standing out on a shelf where powdered drink brands are numerous and offer broadly similar recipes.

For Pokémon, a franchise that remains hugely popular in East Asia several decades after its launch, these food collaborations also keep it present in everyday shopping baskets, beyond the usual games and merchandise.

06

Availability and the collector angle

As with most limited collaborations in Korean food and drink, the availability of each flavor depends directly on the quantities produced at the outset, with no guarantee of restock once stocks run out. Flavors tied to the most popular Pokémon have historically tended to sell faster than the lesser-known versions, which makes this a collection to build quickly rather than put off, for fans of both worlds.
