The Sacred Roots: A Journey into the Origins of Korean Tea
Tea did not arrive in Korea by chance. Originally, it was not merely a drink for pleasure, but a tool for spiritual quest. Today, the Maison Boseong Chronicles share the story of how, over a thousand years ago, courageous monks brought sacred seeds back in their luggage.
A Diplomatic and Spiritual Gift
The history begins during the Three Kingdoms period (6th – 7th century). Korean Buddhist monks, traveling to China to study sacred texts under the Tang Dynasty, discovered a plant capable of keeping the mind alert during long hours of meditation. Legend has it that Queen Seondeok of Silla received the first seeds as a precious gift. However, it was the monks who truly turned Korea into a land of tea by planting them around their temples.
Tea as a Ritual for the Mind
In the monasteries nestled in the heart of the mountains, tea was considered a sacred discipline. It was poetically nicknamed the "herb of infinite clarity" Drinking a cup of green tea allowed one to reach Saseon, a state of mental clarity necessary for enlightenment. Even today, when you brew our Sejak Green Tea, you awaken this millennial tradition of calm and mindfulness.
Why Boseong Became the Heir?
While temples were the first gardens, the Boseong region—with its humid climate and acidic soils—proved to be the ideal sanctuary to perpetuate this expertise. By cultivating our tea plants in harmony with natural cycles, Maison Boseong strives to preserve the original purity intended by the ancient sages.
