Ujeon: The Green Gold of Boseong and the Miracle of the First Rain
There is a fleeting moment every April when time seems to stand still in the mountains of Boseong. This is the period of Gogu (the "Grain Rain"). The tea trees, awakening from winter, offer up their very first buds. This treasure has a name: Ujeon.
Today, in the Maison Boseong Chronicles, we invite you to discover Korea’s rarest and most precious tea.
Why is Ujeon so special?
The word Ujeon (우전) literally means "before the rain." It refers to leaves harvested before April 20th. At this time, the young shoots are still packed with essential oils (or aromatic richness) accumulated throughout the winter, yet they haven't been exposed to the intense spring sun.
The result? An incredible concentration of amino acids that gives the tea a deep Umami flavor, a velvety texture, and a complete absence of bitterness.
A Masterpiece of Harvesting
The Ujeon harvest cannot be mechanized. Each bud, accompanied by one or two tiny leaves, is delicately hand-picked by expert artisans. It takes thousands of these shoots to produce a single kilogram of dry tea. It is this rarity, combined with a thousand-year-old tradition of light roasting, that makes Ujeon the most prestigious gift one can offer in Korea.
Tasting Notes
When you steep Maison Boseong’s Ujeon, expect a unique sensory experience:
Color: A pale, crystalline yellow-green.
Aroma: Notes of toasted chestnut, fresh grass shoots, and a saline hint reminiscent of the Boseong sea breeze.
On the Palate: A sugary sweetness that coats the mouth and an exceptional, lingering finish.
